Ice cream for breakfast? If it's bacon maple ice cream, yes!

So it is with much joy that we can finally report that the bacon maple ice cream we had at Molly Moon's last Sunday brunch lived up to our expectations. The combination of cold, sweet maple ice cream studded with chunks of bacon over a bowl of warm, steel-cut oatmeal was so wrong, and yet so right at the same time. Washed down with a mug of Vivace coffee, it was a truly heroic way to start a Sunday. Try it for yourself this Sunday morning between 9am and 2pm. But call first if you want to make absolutely sure that bacon is in the house.

Stop by Molly Moon's blog to vote on what could be the neighborhood's new taste sensation. Gorgonzola? Black licorice? Rosemary with Meyer lemon? Personally, I'm voting for maple bacon.

Ice cream pies, latest business shuffle

First, the important news (to me, anyway): Just in time for the holidays, Molly Moon's is serving up ice cream pies to go. Right now, they have pumpkin clove ice cream in a graham cracker crust, but in a couple of weeks, there'll be some peppermint ice cream pies as well. Having already tried the pumpkin clove ice cream pie, I can say that it's quite delicious, although would probably benefit from a dollop of whipped cream.

In other news, neighborhood institution and Seattle's oldest hardware store Tweedy & Popp will soon be vacating their longtime home on 45th Street, but fear not—they're just moving to Wallingford Center. While I'm certainly glad that Wallingford Center will have a new tenant with such built-in goodwill from the neighborhood, I'm wondering how Tweedy & Popp's ambience of dusty shelves will fit in with the sunnier aesthetic of Wallingford Center.

Finally, anyone know what's going on with High Maintenance Bitch? Their door recently sported a rent-due notice from the building's landlord, and the store seemed oddly unoccupied during business hours. Send any tips our way.

Breakfast at Molly Moon's this Sunday!

When Molly Moon's first came to Wallingford, those of us who mourned the old Wally's Scoop Shop (in the space now occupied by Joule) wondered whether the new ice creamery would be able to make it through a Seattle winter once the cooler weather dampened the local appetite for ice cream.

Thus, we note that Molly Moon's is attempting to diversify their menu with an experimental breakfast offering this Sunday morning. Ice cream with oatmeal? I've certainly had ice cream with stranger things, so oatmeal doesn't actually seem like that much of a stretch. See for yourself this Sunday.

It's Inauguration Day...for Baracky Road

A new Molly Moon's flavor! Celebrity scoopers! Political activism!

Straight from the Molly Moon's ice cream blog, we bring you word of a special ice cream-themed event today (Saturday).

First of all, the new flavor: Baracky Road--Molly's "special chocolate ice cream recipe that we always have in the shop, chock full of chunks of chocolate, Washington hazelnuts, and Dana Cree's homemade marshmallows."

Second of all, the celebrity scoopers: from 1pm to 3pm, stop by the shop and you might just get served by Congressman Jim McDermott, Dave Hernandez of the Shins, King County Councilmember Dow Constantine, or John Roderick of the Long Winters.

Third of all, the proceeds from the inaugural day of Baracky Road will go to Democrats Work, an organization devoted to mobilizing Democrats to perform community service projects. That's right--they're community organizers.

The flavor will be available from now until Election Day. Now that's change we can believe in!

Dessert tidbits

Two bits of dessert-related news:

• Trophy Cupcakes has a new Wednesday flavor, no doubt inspired by the weekly farmer's market: Farmer's Market Blueberry, described as "Sidhu Farm organic blueberry cake with blueberry-infused buttercream."
• According to our spies, Molly Moon's was closed Tuesday night for a special all-hands meeting to discuss the attack plan for how to handle the hordes of people who will be descending upon Wallingford this Friday for the 4th of July fireworks. This writer shudders to think what the lines might be like for ice cream this Friday when they already stream out the door on normal weekends...
  

Celebrate the last day of school with Molly Moon's

Molly Moon's is celebrating the last day of school for Seattle students (today!) with a "beach" party and a new summer flavor - Creamsicle. They're also offering a today-only special of a hand-packed quart plus a dozen organic cones for $12. See details below:

Even though the weather wasn't very summer-y, we went ahead and took part in "Operation Clambake," the kickoff event of Joule's summer BBQ series.

We tried oysters on the half shell (6 for $4!), razor clam chowder (brothy and chock full of bacon), and the clam boil (huge mussels, clams, sausage, potatoes, and corn). The kids ate hot dogs, and we ate the potato salad they had no interest in. A picnic-style condiment/beverage table in the back helped with the BBQ feel. For dessert, maple-flavored cotton candy and key lime pie, both quite yummy. We missed the live music, but maybe we'll catch it one of the other Sundays this summer. The only downside of the meal was getting dinged for the plate of bread and butter we requested. Sure, it was good bread and butter, but it did feel like a little much compared to the rest of the meal. Ah well - live and learn. Next week's theme: "Let's talk about goat!"

After that, we stopped for coffee at Fuel. (Hint: 50 cents off your drink if you say "high five" to your barista. Offer good through June 30.)

Finally, "second desserts" at Molly Moon's. The Vivace coffee ice cream is full of ground coffee goodness.
